SAN FRANCISCO (MarketsXplora) – Artificial intelligence powerhouse OpenAI on Thursday announced the alpha testing of SearchGPT, a prototype search engine designed to provide users with “fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources,” potentially disrupting the long-standing dominance of tech giant Google in the search market.

The company, backed by Microsoft and valued at over $80 billion, plans to eventually integrate SearchGPT into its widely popular chatbot, ChatGPT. This move comes as OpenAI continues to expand its product lineup and push the boundaries of AI capabilities.

“We think there is room to make search much better than it is today,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated on social media platform X, signaling the company’s intent to revolutionize how users seek information online.

The announcement sent ripples through the tech industry, with Alphabet shares dropping approximately 2.5% on Thursday, while the broader Nasdaq index showed slight gains.

This development follows closely on the heels of OpenAI’s introduction of “GPT-4o mini” last week, an offshoot of its most advanced AI model, GPT-4o. Both innovations are part of OpenAI’s strategy to lead in “multimodality,” offering diverse AI-generated content types within a single tool.

In response to growing competition and expanding opportunities, OpenAI recently bolstered its executive team. Sarah Friar, former CEO of Nextdoor, joined as CFO, while Kevin Weil, with experience at Planet Labs, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, was appointed as Chief Product Officer.

The company also announced a partnership with Apple last month, which includes integrating ChatGPT with Siri.
