WASHINGTON (MarketsXplora) – The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced today that Chairman Gary Gensler will depart from his role on January 20, 2025, at noon, concluding a tenure that began during the aftermath of the 2021 GameStop market volatility.

Gensler, who served as the agency’s 33rd chair since April 17, 2021, brought extensive financial regulatory experience to the position, including previous leadership of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

He also chaired the Maryland Financial Consumer Protection Commission from 2017 to 2019.

Earlier in his career, Gensler played a key role in shaping financial legislation, serving as senior advisor to Senator Paul Sarbanes during the drafting of the landmark Sarbanes-Oxley Act in 2002. His government service also included positions as undersecretary and assistant secretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance from 1997 to 2001.

Prior to his public service career, Gensler was a partner at Goldman Sachs, where he headed the Media Group and led Asian fixed income and currency trading operations. He also served as co-head of Finance, overseeing the firm’s global Controllers and Treasury operations.

A Baltimore native, Gensler holds an economics degree and an MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, earned in 1978 and 1979 respectively.
